ACE Grading: Standards, Centering Tolerances, and How to Predict an ACE 10

The complete 2026 guide to ACE Grading — the centering-strict alternative to PSA and BGS. Learn the 50/50 ±2% rule for ACE 10, the half-point scale, fees from $10, and how to validate your ACE grade with AI before paying for submission.

ACE Grading is a trading card grading service known for one of the strictest centering tolerances in the industry — 50/50 ±2% for an ACE 10 and 60/40 maximum back centering — and a 1-to-10 half-point scale. Popular among modern card collectors who want centering held to a higher standard than PSA's 55/45 tolerance, ACE issues per-card centering measurements and accepts cross-grades from PSA, BGS and CGC. GradingMetric's AI predicts ACE grades alongside PSA, BGS, CGC and SGC from a single card photo — calibrated on 24,000+ actual grading outcomes.

What Is ACE Grading?

ACE Grading is a third-party trading card grader differentiated by its strict centering rules and explicit per-card centering measurements. It sits alongside PSA, BGS, CGC and SGC as a credible grading service, with a particular following in the centering-sensitive modern card market.

Half-Point Scale (1-10)

ACE uses the same half-point granularity as BGS (1, 1.5, 2, … 10) but without subgrades. Each card receives a single overall grade based on the weakest of four condition axes: centering, corners, edges, surface.

Strict Centering — 50/50 ±2%

ACE 10 requires 50/50 centering within a ±2% tolerance — effectively 48/52 to 52/48. This is one of the tightest centering rules in the industry, tighter than PSA's 55/45 and similar to BGS Black Label.

Front + Back Measured

ACE measures front and back centering independently — both must meet the tolerance for the grade. Back centering of 60/40 maximum applies to ACE 10. Most submitters underestimate back centering as a grade ceiling.

Per-Card Centering Reports

ACE publishes the measured centering ratio on each graded card's report — a transparency feature collectors appreciate when buying secondhand. PSA does not publish per-card centering measurements.

ACE Centering Standards (Front & Back)

ACE measures centering as a ratio of border widths on the front and back of every card. Both must meet the standard for that grade.

GradeFront CenteringBack Centering
ACE 1050/50 (±2%) — effectively 48/52 to 52/4860/40 maximum
ACE 9.555/45 or better65/35 maximum
ACE 960/40 or better70/30 maximum
ACE 8.565/35 or better75/25 maximum
ACE 870/30 or better80/20 maximum

Both axes (left-right and top-bottom) are measured independently. The worse axis sets the centering grade. For a deep dive into how ACE measures centering and how it compares to PSA, BGS, CGC and SGC, see our ACE centering standards guide.

ACE Grading Scale

ACE uses a 1-to-10 half-point scale without subgrades — one overall grade per card.

10

ACE 10 (Pristine)

The top ACE grade. Requires 50/50 ±2% front centering, 60/40 back maximum, four sharp corners under magnification, clean edges, and a defect-free surface. Comparable in rarity to a BGS Black Label 10 for centering, but without the perfect-surface requirement.

9.5

ACE 9.5 (Gem Mint)

Strong grade indicating excellent condition with up to 55/45 front centering and minor imperfections visible only under magnification. Roughly equivalent in market perception to a PSA 10 for non-Black-Label cards.

9

ACE 9 (Mint)

Solid mint grade. Accepts 60/40 front centering and minor corner/edge wear visible under magnification. Most cards that grade PSA 9 land at ACE 9 or 9.5 because ACE centering is tighter than PSA at the higher grades but similar at the 9 level.

8.5

ACE 8.5 (NM-MT+)

Near Mint to Mint Plus. Visible but minor imperfections in one or more axes. Centering up to 65/35.

8

ACE 8 (NM-MT)

Near Mint to Mint. Noticeable wear across one or more categories but still presents well. Centering up to 70/30.

ACE vs PSA, BGS, CGC and SGC

ACE differentiates on centering. For surface, corners and edges the standards are broadly similar across all five grading services.

ACE Grading FAQ

What is ACE Grading?

ACE Grading is a third-party trading card grading service known for the strictest centering tolerances in the industry (50/50 ±2% for ACE 10) and a 1-to-10 half-point scale. Popular among modern card collectors who want centering held to a higher standard than PSA's 55/45 tolerance.

What is the centering tolerance for an ACE 10?

ACE 10 requires front centering of 50/50 within ±2% — effectively 48/52 to 52/48 — and back centering of 60/40 or better. ACE 9.5 accepts 55/45 front, ACE 9 accepts 60/40 front.

Is ACE Grading stricter than PSA?

Yes, specifically on centering. ACE 10 requires 50/50 ±2% front centering while PSA 10 accepts up to 55/45 front. A card that grades PSA 10 often grades ACE 9 or 9.5 when cross-submitted due to the centering rule.

How much does ACE Grading cost in 2026?

Economy service starts at $10 per card with 30-45 business day turnaround. Standard service is $20-$25 with 15-25 day turnaround. Express service is $40-$50 with 5-10 day turnaround. Bulk discounts apply at 25+ cards per order.

Are ACE-graded cards worth more than PSA-graded cards?

Typically less, because PSA dominates resale. However, an ACE 10 commands a 10-30% centering-quality premium over a PSA 10 of the same card for centering-sensitive cards (Pokemon Charizard 1st ed, Magic Black Lotus, vintage rookie cards). For most modern cards, PSA 10 still resells for more.

Can I cross-grade an ACE card to PSA or vice versa?

Yes. Crack the slab and re-submit raw, or use PSA's CrossOver service which grades cards while in the original slab. Cross-grading a PSA 10 to ACE often results in an ACE 9 or 9.5 due to ACE's stricter centering rules.
