What AI Card Grading Checks

The same four attributes professional graders evaluate, analyzed by AI in seconds instead of weeks.

Centering

AI measures the border ratios on all four sides of both the front and back of your card. Even slight centering issues can drop a card from a 10 to a 9. Our AI detects centering offsets as small as 55/45 and calculates the exact ratio each grading company would assign.

Corners

The AI inspects all four corners for sharpness, wear, dings, and rounding. Corner condition is one of the most heavily weighted factors in card grading. Even minor corner softening visible only under magnification can cost you a full grade point.

Edges

AI scans the full perimeter of your card for edge whitening, chipping, nicks, and rough cuts. Dark-bordered cards are especially vulnerable to visible edge wear. The AI flags issues that would cause graders to deduct points from the edge sub-grade.

Surface

The AI detects scratches, print lines, ink defects, stains, and other surface imperfections. For holographic cards, it identifies surface scratches on the reflective foil that may be invisible in normal lighting but are caught during professional grading.

AI Grading vs. Traditional Grading

AI card grading doesn't replace professional services — it helps you decide which cards are worth submitting.

Speed: Seconds vs. Weeks

Traditional grading takes 2-12 weeks depending on the service level and company. AI card grading delivers results in seconds. Evaluate your entire collection in one sitting instead of waiting months for returns.

Consistency: No Human Bias

Human graders have subjective tendencies — different graders can assign different grades to the same card depending on the day. AI applies the same criteria every time, giving you consistent and reproducible grade predictions without variability.

Accuracy: 97% on 24,000+ Cards

GradingMetric's AI is calibrated on over 24,000 professionally graded cards across all major grading companies. It achieves 97% accuracy, meaning the predicted grade matches the actual grade within one point in almost every case.

Cost: A Fraction of Grading Fees

Professional grading costs $20-$150+ per card before shipping and insurance. AI pre-screening starts free with 2 credits on signup. Even paid packs cost a fraction of a single grading submission — and credits never expire, so you only spend when you find cards worth filtering.

AI Card Grading FAQ

Common questions about using AI to predict card grades.

How accurate is AI card grading?

GradingMetric's AI card grading is 97% accurate, calibrated on over 24,000 professionally graded cards across PSA, BGS, CGC, and SGC. The AI analyzes centering, corners, edges, and surface quality using the same criteria human graders use, delivering predictions that match professional results within one grade point in the vast majority of cases.

What card types does AI grading support?

GradingMetric supports AI grading for Pokemon cards, baseball cards, basketball cards, football cards, Magic: The Gathering (MTG), and Yu-Gi-Oh cards. The AI is trained on graded examples from each category, so it understands the unique characteristics and common defects specific to each card type.

How fast is AI card grading?

AI card grading delivers results in seconds after you upload your photo. Compare that to traditional grading services where you wait weeks or even months for your cards to be evaluated, shipped, and returned. With AI pre-screening, you can evaluate your entire collection in a single sitting.

Is AI card grading free?

Yes, GradingMetric gives every new account 2 free credits — enough for 2 full AI card analyses — with no credit card required. Simply create an account, upload your card photos, and receive grade predictions instantly. When you need more, credit packs start at $9 and credits never expire.

Can AI replace professional grading?

No, AI card grading is a powerful pre-screening tool, not a replacement for professional grading. Only PSA, BGS, CGC, and SGC can issue official grades that affect market value. AI grading helps you decide which cards are worth the $20-$150+ submission fee by predicting the grade before you send your card in, saving you money on cards that would receive lower grades than expected.

Which grading companies does AI predict for?

GradingMetric predicts grades for the four major grading companies — PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), BGS (Beckett Grading Services), CGC (Certified Guaranty Company), SGC (Sportscard Guaranty Corporation) — plus ACE Grading for centering-sensitive submissions. Each company uses slightly different scales and centering tolerances (PSA 55/45 vs ACE 50/50 ±2% vs BGS Black Label 50/50), and our AI accounts for those per-grader differences in its predictions.

How is the 97% accuracy number measured?

The 97% figure is the binary classification accuracy on the PSA 9-vs-PSA-10 decision on a held-out test set of cards the AI did not see during training. The full calibration dataset is 24,000+ trading cards that have completed real grading at PSA, BGS, CGC and SGC. Accuracy is lower on tighter classifications (e.g., PSA 9.5 vs PSA 10 on BGS half-point scale) and higher on broader buckets (e.g., 'grade 8 or above' classification reaches ~99%).
